Athens

June 4th, 2012:

Mom and I arrived at the airport around midnight and met Bethany at baggage claim. We then boarded a bus heading to the center of the city. We then walked several blocks to our hostel, where we had a four bed room with a bathroom to ourselves. Ben would join us the following morning.

June 5th, 2012:

The three of us woke up in the morning and waited around for Ben's arrival. He made his way to our hostel around noon and the four of us headed off to find some food. We ended up eating at a restaurant near our hostel in a square. The food was very tasty and was a good introduction to Greek cuisine. Afterwards, we started exploring the city. We walked by old churches and the Roman agora before making our way up the hill to the Ancient Greek agora. We had initially planned to see the Acropolis first, but the agora closed several hours earlier. After walking down the hill again to see the agora, we walked back up and down the other side to see the acropolis museum. There were ruins of ancient Athens under the walkway to the museum. The museum contained a video about the construction of the Parthenon and artifacts that had been excavated from the acropolis, including some of the paneling that were on the outside of the Parthenon. After spending a little while at the museum, we made our way back up to the hill to the Acropolis up several flights of stairs. The Acropolis consisted of several ruined buildings, including the Parthenon. It also offered a spectacular view of modern Athens.

Our next stop was to the two main parks of Athens. We walked through them on our way to see the changing of the guard in front of the Parliament. The guards wore relatively funny outfits and stood motionless until the changing of the guard ceremony. After the ceremony, we went to a restaurant to have dinner that had traditional Greek food. We then made our way back to our hostel. We were leaving Athens the next day for Mykonos.

June 6th, 2012:

In the morning, Bethany and I woke up and went to the Archaeology museum in Athens. We took the subway there and saw ruins when we were in the subway. The museum had artifacts from several different groups that had lived in Athens in including the Mycenaeans and the prehistoric peoples of Athens. We had to rush through the museum since we needed to return to the hostel to catch a ride to the ferry to Mykonos. The museum was pretty well done. One thing I learned is that early Greek statues shared characteristics with  those of the Egyptians. When we got back to the hostel we headed to the port and boarded the ferry to Mykonos.
